The 6146-8010 is an extremely rare and notable watch for a number of reasons. It is often referred to as the “Arabesque” due to the graphic printing around the GS logo. It is a transitional model from 61GS to 61GS Special. The whole watch body is made of hard steel (HSS), sapphire triple-cut surface, specially adjusted movement. The production is very few, and it can be said to be one of the most precious models among the antique GS.
Introduced in the November 1969 edition of the Seiko Sales newsletter, and only on sale for a year. It used a hardened stainless steel case and crystal faced crystal. It has also been speculated that this model was regulated more accurately than the normal Grand Seikos, and was in fact the precursor to the Grand Seiko “61GS Special” that were introduced a year later.
In an article that discussed the interesting background story of this reference 6146-8010 being buried in the time capsule at the 1970 World Expo in Osaka. One of the little-known facts about the 6146-8010 Arabesque is that it was selected as an object representing “the achievements of our civilisation and the everyday experience of the Japanese people” and two examples were placed in two time capsules that were buried next to Osaka Castle in celebration of the Japan World Exposition 1970.
The design and contents of the two time capsules are identical, with each containing no fewer than 2,098 objects. The capsules were buried one on top of the other, with the upper capsule intended to be first opened in the year 2000, and then once every 100 years after that. The second capsule is – astonishingly – intended to only be opened 5,000 years after the Expo.
Grand Seiko 6146-8010 is extremely rare and has a historical story. It is a very suitable watch for collectors!
